Here's what those who care about you need to know...

What Friends and Family Need to Know about Your Gambling Problem

A strong support network is essential when you are trying to quit gambling. You need the people that are close to you to be able to support you in this major life change; it makes the entire process of quitting much easier. However, even when friends and family are trying to be supportive and help you through the rough times, they may not quite know how to help you, or how to be supportive.

In fact, many people who do not understand addiction or compulsive behaviors often rush to judge people who suffer from such problems. Many well meaning friends may tell you to "just quit" or they may say, "Why don't you just stop gambling?" These people wrongly assume that you can easily quit gambling, just by having them tell you to stop. These are the people who have likely never suffered from any type of addiction or compulsion and they do not realize that it is just not that easy.

It is important for you to remember, that even though you may have people in your life that are close to you telling you to just quit or walk away from your habit, compulsive gambling can not be reduced to such a simple solution. It is a complex addiction that feeds on the feelings and needs of the sufferer.

That is not to say that people who hold this wrong and insensitive opinion can't help you in your process to quitting gambling. In fact, these people likely want very much to be part of the solution and not add to the problem. The first thing that you need to do with people like this is help to educate them. They need to understand this complex addiction before they can begin helping you. Start by giving them this article, or other articles that explain the addiction, so they can see what's going on beneath the surface, beneath a mere behavior.

In my book there is an entire chapter dedicated to the intricacies of gambling and how the compulsion works (Chapter 1). The book is written in simple English making it easy to understand for everyone, as well as an interesting read. This chapter can serve two very important purposes. The first is that you will read it and finally begin to understand this terrible addiction that you are suffering from. The second purpose is that you can hand it to your support person or people and they can learn about the addiction and better understand what you are going through. By better understanding the addiction, they will be better able to help you.

If your main support person is your spouse or other close family member, they probably understand you very well, and the things that make you who you are and help you to do the things that you do. This is a good thing. Your support people need to understand the addiction of gambling and they need to understand the gambler, their lifestyle and what makes them tick.

A little education will go along way in helping the people in your life understand your compulsion which in turn will help you put compulsive gambling behind you once and for all
